You spend about a third of your life asleep — roughly 26 years if you make it to 79. You would think that with all that practice, sleep would be boring. It is the opposite. The moment your eyes close, your body kicks off one of the strangest, busiest shifts of its entire day. Here are nine genuinely weird (and completely true) things happening while you are dead to the world.
While you sleep, your brain runs a built-in cleaning crew called the glymphatic system. Channels around your brain cells widen and flush out the metabolic waste that built up during the day. In other words, a good night's sleep is a literal brain rinse — and it only really gets going once you are deeply asleep.
During REM sleep — the dreaming stage — your brain switches off most of your voluntary muscles. It is called REM atonia, and it is a safety feature: it stops you physically acting out your dreams and kicking the wall (or your partner). Occasionally the timing slips and you wake before it lifts, which is where that frozen 'I can't move' feeling comes from.
Measure yourself before bed and again when you wake and you may be up to a centimetre taller. Lying down overnight takes pressure off the discs in your spine, letting them rehydrate and expand. Gravity quietly squashes you back down through the day. Free height, every single morning.
You are drifting off and — suddenly — you feel like you are falling and your whole body twitches awake. That is a hypnic jerk, and up to 70% of people get them. Nobody is completely sure why they happen, but they are harmless. They are more common when you are overtired, stressed, or wired on late-night caffeine.
As bedtime approaches, your core body temperature falls by around a degree to help trigger sleep, and it keeps dropping through the night. It is also why a cool, dark room makes nodding off so much easier — you are working with your biology instead of against it.
Sleep is not downtime for your memory — it is the night shift. While you rest, your brain replays and files away what you learned that day, moving it from short-term to long-term storage. It is exactly why 'sleep on it' is genuinely good advice before a big decision or an exam.
In REM sleep your eyes dart rapidly back and forth behind closed lids — that is literally what 'rapid eye movement' means. Researchers think the movement is loosely linked to the scenes playing out in your dreams. Your eyes are basically watching a film only you can see.
Sleep-talking, sleepwalking and even sleep-texting are all 'parasomnias' — your body doing awake things while your brain is mostly offline. Most are harmless and you will remember none of it. The biggest risk is usually whatever you typed to the group chat at 3am.
You exhale water vapour all night long, which is part of why you wake up thirsty with a dry mouth — especially if you breathe through your mouth or snore. Nose breathing keeps things more humid and settled, which is exactly why some people use a hydrating mouth tape to gently encourage it.
Most of these night-time feats — the brain clean-up, the memory filing, the temperature drop — happen best during deep, uninterrupted sleep. The fastest wins: keep your room cool and dark, park the caffeine after lunch, and give yourself a consistent wind-down routine.
